World Environment Day - 5 June 2008

World Environment Day - 5 June 2008

The World Environment Day is celebrated every year of 5 June - a day dedicated to spreading awareness about preserving and enhancing the environment by the United Nations. For the year 2008, the World Environment Day slogan is Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy.

The organisation United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is dedicated to the cause of caring for the environment and aims at informing, inspiring and enabling nations and its people to improve the quality of their lives without compromising that of future generations. The World Environment Day this year will be focussing towards creating low carbon economies and some of the essential tools include forest conservation, energy efficiency, alternative energy sources etc. The main celebrations will take place in New Zealand.

Here are some simple ways by which you can play a role in contributing to the health and well being of our environment -

- Choose a low-carbon lifestyle at home and while traveling.
- It is good to have your own convenience but once in a while, walk to nearby destinations.
- If you come across someone burning leaves or felling trees in your locality or elsewhere, voice your opinion on the matter and if needed, inform the authorities.
- Close taps when not in use.
- Turn off the light, fan, television, PC and radio etc when not in use.
- Dry your clothes on a washing line instead of the washing machine.
- To remain healthy and fit, go out for a 40 minutes jog in the park rather than running on the treadmill.

Let's do our bit!
