India is blessed with a very large variety of different qualities of stones such as Marble, Granite, Limestone, Sandstone, Slate, and Quartzite. This is perhaps the reason why, stone carvings and scupltures have always been popular in India, right from the time when Hindu & Muslim rulers popularised this art form in India.

A special mention has to be made to those skilled, Master craftmen who worked relentlessly to produce a true historical masterpiece, the Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. This exquisite example of intricate carvings and craft work during the Mughal period continues to be one of the most precious tourist attraction's of India. In fact, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which was build around the mid 1600's. King Ashoka's court, during the 3rd century B.C also brought to light the marvellous beauty of stone carvings and stone structures.
